What is the Project Management Professional (PMP)® Exam?
The Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification through The Project Management Institute (PMI) has been the gold standard for project management certification for over 30 years. Over 750,000 project managers have earned the certification, demonstrating their ability to deliver large, complex projects on time and within budget.
To qualify for the PMP certification exam, you must fulfill the following requirements:
- If you have a high school diploma or equivalent, you need at least 5 years of project management experience and 7,500 documented hours spent leading projects
- If you have a four-year degree (bachelor’s or equivalent) you need at least 3 years of project management experience and 4,500 documented hours spent leading projects.
- You also need 35 contact hours in project management education with both the secondary and four-year degrees.

You need to prepare and follow through on a PMP exam prep study plan that allows you to understand, and not just memorize, project management processes and project flow. You also need to take mock tests to get used to the exam style and improve your readiness. Finally, you need to develop an exam day approach that helps you reduce stress and manage your time during the exam.

You should spend anywhere from 3 to 6 months preparing for the certification exam.
